IT doesn’t usually work very well but some doctors presribe it because it is cheap and other doctors don’t know better because they aren’t psychiatrists. It is sometimes prescribed for insomnia.

If you are depressed, see a real psychiatrist. New antidepressants have way less side effects and work better.

It is probably the depression that is affecting your memory. That symptom is called “thought blocking” and is pretty common.

Also, if you multitask or have a lot of things on your plate, you will forget things. If you are stressed out or are going through a worrisome time in your life, you might have your mind elsewhere and forget stuff.

DOn’t worry. Just slow down some, get some good sleep (at least 5 uninterrupted hours per night), and consult a psychiatrist for a medication change.

Been there, done that.

Hope you feel better soon.

MONITOR CLOSELY: Concomitant use of agents with serotonergic activity such as serotonin reuptake inhibitors, monoamine oxidase inhibitors, tricyclic antidepressants, 5-HT1 receptor agonists, ergot alkaloids, lithium, St. John’s wort, phenylpiperidine opioids, dextromethorphan, and 5-hydroxytryptophan may potentiate the risk of serotonin syndrome, which is a rare but serious and potentially fatal condition thought to result from hyperstimulation of brainstem 5-HT1A receptors.

MANAGEMENT: In general, the concomitant use of multiple serotonergic agents should be avoided if possible, or otherwise approached with caution if potential benefit is deemed to outweigh the risk. Close monitoring is recommended for signs and symptoms of excessive serotonergic activity such as CNS irritability, altered consciousness, confusion, myoclonus, ataxia, abdominal cramping, hyperpyrexia, shivering, pupillary dilation, diaphoresis, hypertension, and tachycardia. Particular caution is advised when increasing the dosages of these agents. The potential risk of serotonin syndrome should be considered even when administering one serotonergic agent following discontinuation of another, as some agents may demonstrate a prolonged elimination half-life. For example, a 5-week washout period is recommended following use of fluoxetine before administering another serotonergic agent.”

I take 100mg of Zoloft a night and 23mg of Desyrel (trazodone) per night. Would marijuana use cause a bad reaction to my body? Could I overdose on marijuana with the medicine? I’m not planning on mixing the Zoloft and Desyrel with marijuana. I just need to know if there will be adverse side effects.
Marijuana has not been shown to cause adverse reactions with most medications.. This is from what research has actually been done, however because marijuana is considered illegal by the federal government there isn’t much research going on (if any).

Some local non profit organizations in states that have legalized medical marijuana (such as Oregon, California and Washington) will do their own research and have patients keep track of side effects with their medications as well as other factors like level of medicinal benefit for their specific medical problem.

I personally have used Zoloft, Trazodone and marijuana together and *I* did not have any adverse reaction. I haven’t had any reactions between marijuana and any other prescription at this point.

Do be mindful of the fact that you are taking prescription medications that alter your brain chemistry… that is what they are designed to do. You are also using marijuana which will alter your neurotransmitter levels. Your effect will be different with the prescriptions alone than with marijuana most likely. In my experience (taking prescription psychotropic medications for the last 14 years myself) the marijuana helps regulate my mood far better than any of the prescription medications I’ve taken. In 14 years I have taken most of them.

Keep in mind that I am not a medical professional and this is just in my own experience.

Is Serequel any more addictive that the average antidepressant, or is it just as addictive as clonazepam (!!!!!!)?
The withdrawals from Seraquel are pretty light. The side effects of Seraquel on the other hand are really really bad. I quit taking Seraquel just from the side effect. Zyprexa had pretty nasty withdrawal symptoms too and the side effects weren’t as bad as Seraquel though. The worst withdrawals for me were from Paxil.

As far as being addictive. Medicine isn’t generally regarded as addictive, though because they produce withdrawals they appear to have an additive quality. However, the definition of addiction is a little different.

I believe she has a learning disability, but not schizophrenia. I heard Geodon is a last resort med. If its true then what happens when she is 20? Can this med. do much harm? I also heard you cannot diagnose schizophrenia under 15 years of age, is that true?
First of all, remind yourself that unless you are a psychiatrist, you are not qualified to diagnose someone else’s child. As such, you might want to ask yourself how involved you really want to be in someone else’s parenting. You should also ask yourself if your friend will appreciate your advice and insight or not. If so, then you might want to gently bring up the topic of her daughter’s illness, and find out if she has had her daughter evaluated more recently. You should also find out if she had a second opinion, and perhaps other drugs she has tried.

That being said, Geodon is a very high powered drug and I am quite surprised and rather shocked to hear that a child was placed on it at the age of 9. Geodon is an atypical antipsychotic. That means that it’s technically an antipsychotic, but it’s used in different ways for other treatments such as bipolar disorder. It is commonly used for the treatment of schizophrenia.

One of the side effects of Geodon is a heavy, deep sleep that is difficult to wake up from, or sedation. It also has a huge list of other side effects: Accidental injury, cold symptoms, constipation, cough, diarrhea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, indigestion, muscle tightness, nausea, rash, stuffy and runny nose, upper respiratory infection, vision problems, weakness

Due to its extensive list of side effects (these are only a few) it IS typically not prescribed until other drugs have been tried and failed.

I started taking Abilify (which I have been doing well on) instead of Geodon. The Geodon absolutely made me non-functioning. I have been doing really well on the Abilify and I am to start taking the Lamictal in a few days. Is there anything I should expect from this combo? I am really nervous after what I went through with the Geodon…oh yeah, its for bipolar! Thanks!
I haven’t been on both at the same time but I was on Lamictal for about three years. I had the worst withdrawal from any prescription psychiatric medication in my life from that drug and I have had some bad ones. It also gave me flat mood and other side effects like sleep paralysis/vivid dreaming. I also would have spells where I could barely walk. This was after I’d been on it for years—not just adjusting to it.

So I really wouldn’t recommend taking Lamictal to anyone unless they have severe seizures and it works for them or they have absolutely debilitating bipolar disorder and it’s all that helps. It’s a heavy-duty nasty drug and that combo is going to be quite a punch for your brain to handle.

If I were you, I’d seek a second opinion. I don’t know your medical history or anything, but that’s a LOT of medication to be handling. I’ve read about all the other drugs on the market currently that I haven’t actually tried (I’m bipolar too) and Abilify doesn’t look like anything lightweight.

So the best advice I can offer is to caution you about the seriousness of Lamictal. Some people of course adjust to it well. But many many have horrible problems with it. Think carefully before you agree to take both, and do your own research on the web about other people’s experiences. There’s a forum: http://www.crazyboards.org/forums/. It has a lot of first hand accounts. Maybe you can find someone else posting on there with the same combo you are looking to attempt. You can also read about reactions to the individual meds. It’s a helpful site in my experience.

I ran out a few days ago and my prescription won’t be ready until tomorrow morning.
Theoretically, yes. There’s that risk of rash that’s more likely if you don’t gradually increase your dose at first and the same thing happens when you’ve given the med a few days to get out of your system. However, I’m on it for bipolar too and I’ve gone several days without it then went back on my normal dose and nothing happened. I did get scolded for it by my doctor because it is potentially dangerous. Probably four days won’t make a big difference, but you might want to taper your dose back up a little if you can.

I used to be insatiable, but, now, nothing. Even masterbating is useless.
Are there any alternative medicines, vitamins, etc. that can help? I’ve been on medication since January and I can’t go off because it’s really helping me.
In homeopathy, the following medicines may remove the ill effects of allopathic medicine including Geodon. I said ill effects, and therefore the effects you are enjoying will not disturbed. The medicines are Nux Vomica 30 three times a day for one day .use maximum upto three days only. Pulsatilla 200 one dose a day for three days. Pulsatilla should not be used during menstruation. Both the medicines are excellent for mood swings, Pulsatilla has been compared by many to a weathercock as far as mood swings are concerned.

If you are using Geodon, naturally your Hypothalmus-pituitary-adrinal axis is the centre of activity, with stress factor aggravating the symptoms. A poor neuron firing or a sensitive neuron firing with photophobia would be added symptoms. Natrum Mur and Hydrastis 30 to large extent can come to rescue here with the sodium factor and gastric factor brought under control. Other medicines of value you can use in homeopathy are Ignatia Amara (not to be used near Nux Vomica), and most of the Kali (potassium) derivates. The medicines of use for you would be Kali Phos (in particular if there is an anxiety syndrome or a panic attack involved), Kali Carb (Despoondency, alternating moods, irritable, full of fear and imaginations, anxiety felt in stomach,(adrinals), sensation as if bed were sinking, never wants to be left alone, never quite or contented, Obstinate, and hypersensitive to pain noise and touch). Kali Bromide (Hallucinations and delusions).
Arnica ( for all purposes including strengthening the adrinals and shocks pains, purification and strengthening of the powers of the blood to reach all places and correct all problems related to lack of blood reaching places). Staphisagria ( for after effects of sexual indulgences).

You should be consulting your doctor before administration of any medicines. Consult a homeopath before administration of any homeo medicines. with best wishes,

i just started a new medication- Geodon. It helped me mentally once I was on the right dose, but I didn’t stay on it for very long because I had almost constant nausea and/or heartburn, which I couldn’t handle.
